DIY Hair Color vs. Professional Salon Hair Color

Friends: Don't let untrained friends color anyone's hair!

Long term, a professionally colored head of hair is often in much healthier condition than hair that has been repeatedly overlapped with the boxed formulas. Not to mention your bathr

oom and skin stay stain free...

Don't let the packaging fool you, using a boxed home haircolor kit, or any haircolor in untrained, unexperienced hands (Hello: Sally Beauty Supply home haircolor addicts!) labeled "Professional" does not yield professional results on it's own! While I know quite a few friends who regularly use it (I'm sorry to break it to you, but I will ALWAYS be able to tell you or a friend did it yourselves!) What you don't know about haircolor can later add up to hair troubles and corrective work when used long-term.   Yes, the truth may be hard to swallow, but think of it as tough love.  Whether I color your hair or not, I would be doing you all a major
disservice by not explaining how these thing work, because, frankly, a lot of people think they can mimic the results that a professional can, that it's not a big deal, and that it doesn't hurt anything.  The reality of the situation is:  Yes it can.  Your hairdresser can see quite a lot more of what is going on with your hair than what you may notice everyday, and in the event that I see someone headed down the road to damage, breakage and poor color retention, it is my responsibility to help steer you in the opposite direction before permanent damage takes over.

It happens, a lot. This is what I do for a living, and learning how to do it involved a lot more than watching a commercial with a celebrity like Tina Fey telling me she colors her hair at home (I'm really supposed to believe that?!) and a sheet of instructions from a box off a drugstore shelf. I had to spend a minimum of 500 hours of my training on color theory alone... and that still wasn't enough to know everything there is to know about color, to this day I still get continuing training for color, and it's not easy. I often have to apply 2 different formulas on one head of hair to achieve a seamless single color result on a client using a balanced formula that is as gentle and long lasting possible, while still being strong enough to deliver the coverage, vibrancy and durability that you want... guaranteed.

Home haircolor kits are simply a "one size fits all" formula often meant for gray coverage or virgin hair. They often have more ammonia and peroxide than what I may custom formulate for you because they have to be strong enough to work on the most resistant hair, even if that is not what you're starting with. Repeated overlap of products like these make the hair brittle, dull, and make results unpredictable when you decide to change your color. What seems like an inexpensive alternative to salon visits may end up costing you big bucks and hours of time when you need it corrected by a professional.
