Monday I attended an introductory class for DevaCurl, a line of hair products specifically designed to enhance curly hair. Curly hair specialists use these products to first help you identify the type of curls you have, (I identified my hair type as "Wavy") then customize a product regimen that will best compliment your curl type.
At first the sulfate-free hair care line's 3-step "Cleanse. Hydrate. Style." regimen seems ordinary, but what sets this stuff apart from traditional curl products are the sulfate-free, little to no lathering "No-Poo" and "Low-Poo" cleansers, (the "Poo" refers to harsh detergents found in most shampoos) which I would say would be in the same family as the "Wen" cleansing conditioner hair care system sold on TV. These cleansers take the place of traditional shampoo, cleansing the scalp and hair with a rich feeling, invigorating mint cleanser while beginning to replenish the moisture dry hair needs. After rinsing, a hydrating treatment like "One Condition" or "Heaven and Hair" gets massaged into the hair, lightly rinsed out, then followed immediately with curl defining styling products and a good blotting with microfiber towels.
Although today I noticed that the routine demands a little extra time and attention to detail, it totally pays off... I watched head after head of dry, frizzy, free form waves transform into beautifully defined, bouncy, shiny curls! Even thought the line helps you customize a specific routine for your unique hair type, these products are great for all hair types... even if you don't have curls! I was happy to see a relatively streamlined brand considering how versatile yet specialized these products are, including the citrus-scented color care cleanser and conditioners, DevaCare.
Overall I am pretty impressed with the line, and it is cruelty-free! If I get a lot of positive feedback with this line I will take it up a notch by taking the intensive 3-day NYC course with DevaCurl to specialize in curly hair!
